About Kara
Author Bio
I grew up on a small family farm in Western Colorado, and relocated to Oregon to attend college there. I hold a Bachelor’s in Computer Science, an MBA, and have been a strategy and delivery consultant in high tech for over 20 years. I currently live in Portland with my daughter and two fur babies, Loki (pictured) and Alice.
In between each of my corporate journeys (Intel to Nike, and Nike to Twitter) I have also launched two startup companies. The first was Black Label Films, a boutique DSLR filmmaking studio specializing in event, fashion, music and corporate storytelling. The second was Dinner In Provence, a sustainable agriculture, macro-balanced food blog with health coaching. Various life events after several years running each told me that their chapters were coming to a close.
I feel so blessed to have lived a life of variety and adventure. Other creative pursuits include being a lifelong pianist, a dancer since college and a photographer/filmmaker since my mid-20’s. As mentioned in FAQ, I was also a fanfic author all through my 20’s.
As you can probably tell, I have a unique personality that’s somewhat split – even though my main income has been in tech, creativity has always been the foundation of my identity. As such, I’ve been writing prolifically ever since I begged my older brother to teach me the alphabet in Kindergarten.
Feel free to read the FAQ for more specific questions about how I got started in writing, how I hone my craft, and where I get inspiration. You can also reach out with any questions you have via my Contact page.

Themes
Mental health and intergenerational trauma (epigenetics, the study of how experiences shape our genes) is a theme through all of my writing but especially Violent Stars.
My own family ancestry has deeply-embedded trauma related to war (I come from a long line of military men), alcoholism, violent abuse, and poverty.
The real reason I write is to help others not feel so alone, and to give them hope. I seek to bring issues like mental illness, grief and trauma out of the darkness and into the light so we can heal and move on to live as our Best Selves.
I feel particularly called to help men in any way possible, including our next generation of young men. Research shows that men comprise roughly 80% of suicides and 90% of all domestic violence.
My inbox is always open if you need a listening ear and if you are in crisis, please do not hesitate to call the National Suicide Hotline by dialing 988 anywhere in the US.
